Yesterday saw Google launch its own social networking site, Buzz, against established rivals Facebook and Twitter – but is there now too much choice for where people visit to catch-up with their friends?
Google Buzz allows users to share personal updates, photos and videos. Anyone using the existing email service, Gmail, will automatically be able to use the service, meaning the network already has hundreds of millions of people.
Whilst a bold move on Google’s part, the industry reaction seems to be that it will never be able to compete with the likes of Twitter …

As they say you’ve got to be in it to win it, or ‘Twin’ it – the new term for competitions run solely via Twitter. At the end of last year we ran a successful Twitter competition between Samsung Cameras and Grazia magazine. This time we’ve been at it again for Carte Blanche’s new animated eCard service, www.NoPostie.com.
Teaming up with Glamour Magazine’s UK Twitter feed, we gave away some Barry M make-up goodies, along with a free annual subscription to the NoPostie service. All users had to do was visit the …

As well as contuining to recruit via professional online networks, such as Linked In, more and more companies are turning to social networks, including Facebook and Twitter, as part of their strategy to fill job vacancies.
Termed ‘social recruiting’, this cost-effective and efficient method is proving a hit with employers as not only does it help source quality candidates, it also improves brand visibility for the employer.
But what if you’re the one looking for the job? Your presence on social networks can boost your career and enhance your prospects of finding …

Last week we were lucky enough to work with Grazia Magazine’s Twitter stream to help drive awareness and engagement of Samsung Cameras dedicated blog, Shutter Chatter. www.shutterchatter.co.uk is a photography blog curated by a series of guest bloggers, all talking about their life and how photography integrates into their daily experiences.
In order to spread the word to the masses about the blog, we brokered a partnership with Grazia offering their Twitter followers the chance to win a £100 TopShop gift card every day for five days – all they had …

I was very excited when Twitter announced that they were adding a lists function to the site, enabling you to make themed lists of your Twitter users. For example, if I wanted to create a list of gadget journalists I would then be able to view the tweets from just the people on my list.
This is a great way of filtering your Twitter feed as, if you’re anything like me, you’re following quite a variety of different tweeters. This is a nice way of categorising into vertical sectors and very …

According to a recent survey, just two thirds of iPhone applications are used more than 90 days after they are first downloaded. With a relatively short shelf-life for the majority of apps, questions have been raised around the value of iPhone apps and how should they be best used.
The key to longevity is determining which apps offer long-term value to the user. These primarily include any news-based apps that are constantly updated and offer added value, whilst entertainment based apps tend to have shorter shelf lives due to their viral nature.
Whilst there will always be a place in …

I’m loving Jack Johnson’s innovative use of Twitter to promote his new live album, En Concert. If you visit his website, http://twitter.jackjohnsonmusic.com, there is a premade message which, if you tweet out, will entitle you to a free MP3 download from the new album.
This is a fantastic example of how you can create a buzz on Twitter very simply and encourage other people to spread the word on your behalf.
Jack Johnson’s label clearly sees the value in using Twitter and may have based their decision on the back of the …

Today Spotify kindly gave up their time to talk us through the service, how it can help those in the communications industry and what their plans are for the future.
For those of you who haven’t jumped on the Spotify band wagon, the site basically allows you to listen and share millions of music tracks for free over the internet. You can build your own playlists and send them to your friends and as the service is paid for by advertising it means it’s free!
For anyone in the communications industry there …

I was interested to hear that Facebook is currently trialling a new messenger service, which potentially could rival Twitter. While at the moment it’s only being tested in India, there are rumours it could come over to the UK in the near future.
Facebook says: ‘Similar to the Facebook experience you get on your mobile phones, Facebook ‘Lite’ is a fast-loading, simplified version of Facebook that enables people to make comments, accept Friend requests, write on people’s Walls, and look at photos and …
